Intensive skin treatments are gaining an ever more prominent place in the treatment of facial aging. The goal of these treatments is to cause selective damage to the skin surface, after which the healing process begins, the so-called 'resurfacing' of the skin. During the healing period fibroblasts are stimulated to produce new collagen and elastin, by means of which a rejuvenating effect is achieved. Resurfacing treatments can be divided into chemical peels, dermabrasia and laser treatments. The wishes and expectations of the patient, the skin type and the experience of the physician play an important role in choosing the treatment type. In addition, skin enhancement products are being used to an increasing degree in both the preparatory phase and the recovery phase of skin treatments, again to optimize treatment results. Complications from intensive skin treatments are rare and are usually due to a suboptimal indication or carelessness.
