Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Mycology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Canine Pathology

Background:

  • Histoplasmosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by Histoplasma capsulatum.
  • This zoonotic disease affects various animal species, including canines.
  • Canine histoplasmosis can manifest with diverse clinical signs, impacting lymph nodes, skin, and oral tissues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a case of canine histoplasmosis in Ecuador.
  • To detail the diagnostic process for Histoplasma capsulatum infection in a dog.
  • To document the treatment and outcome of a canine histoplasmosis case.

Main Methods:

  • Cytological and histopathological examination of affected tissues.
  • Histochemical staining techniques for fungal identification.
  • Fungal culture and DNA sequencing (ITS region) for definitive diagnosis.
  • Clinical assessment and monitoring during treatment.

Main Results:

  • A 4-year-old female canine presented with multifocal lymphadenitis, skin lesions, and gingival lesions.
  • Diagnostic analyses confirmed Histoplasma capsulatum as the causative agent.
  • The canine patient showed a satisfactory response to ketoconazole treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Histoplasmosis is a relevant differential diagnosis for dogs with lymphadenitis and mucocutaneous lesions in Ecuador.
  • Multimodal diagnostic approaches are crucial for accurate identification of Histoplasma capsulatum.
  • Ketoconazole is an effective treatment option for canine histoplasmosis, leading to favorable outcomes.
