Urinary Tract Calculi I: Introduction01:28

Urinary Tract Calculi I: Introduction

889
Renal calculi, or kidney stones, are solid deposits of minerals and salts formed inside the kidneys. In medical terminology, "calculus" refers to the stone itself, while "lithiasis" describes the process of stone formation. Depending on their location within the urinary system, these stones may be classified as either urolithiasis, when situated within the urinary tract, or nephrolithiasis, when located within the kidneys. Each term signifies the specific impact of the stone.Predisposition...

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

5.5K
Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

The testes, also known as testicles, are the male gonads. They are housed within the scrotum, a sac-like structure located beneath the penis. The scrotum's primary role is to regulate the temperature of the testes, which is crucial for sperm production.
Each testis is surrounded by the tunica albuginea, a dense connective tissue layer that provides structural support and protection. This layer is covered by an outer serous membrane called the tunica vaginalis, which helps reduce friction...

A tough, fibrous membrane, the tunica albuginea, covers the testes, extending inward to form fibrous partitions or septa, dividing them into internal compartments called lobules. Each lobule has 1 to 3 tightly coiled seminiferous tubules where sperm production occurs. These tubules merge into a tubular network at the back of the testis, known as the rete testis. It connects to 15 to 20 efferent ductules, leading to the epididymis.
The spermatogenic cells, responsible for producing sperm, are...

Urinary Tract Calculi III: Medical Management

The diagnosis of renal calculi involves several imaging techniques, including non-contrast CT scans and ultrasound. These methods help visualize kidney stones, assess their size and location, and detect possible obstructions. Additionally, Measuring urine pH is useful for diagnosing specific stone types, such as struvite (alkaline pH) and uric acid stones (acidic pH). Cystine stones are primarily linked to cystinuria, a genetic condition. A urinalysis helps detect blood in the urine (hematuria)...

Urinary Tract Calculi II: Pathophysiology and Clinical Manifestations

713
Renal calculi, commonly termed kidney stones, are crystalline solid masses that form in the kidneys but can occur at any point within the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The pathophysiology of renal stones involves several key factors: supersaturation of the urine with stone-forming constituents, changes in urine pH, a decrease in urine volume, and the presence of substances that promote or inhibit stone formation.Supersaturation of Urine: This is the...

Summary

Testicular calculus, an extremely rare condition, was identified in a young adult with a painful testicular mass. This case highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in differential diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Testicular calculus is an exceptionally rare condition with an unknown cause.
  • This report details the third documented case of testicular calculus.

Observation:

  • A 31-year-old male presented with a painful, solid left testicular mass.
  • Initial diagnostic work-up considered testicular tumor.
  • Histopathologic examination after orchiectomy revealed a testicular calculus.

Findings:

  • Solid testicular lesions in young adults are often presumed to be testicular cancer.
  • Differential diagnosis requires careful consideration of uncommon pathologies.

Implications:

  • Testicular calculus should be considered in the differential diagnosis of young adults presenting with painful, solid testicular masses, especially those with hyperechogenic ultrasonographic findings.
  • Further case reports are needed to clarify the etiology and optimal treatment for this rare condition.
