[Diseases of the circulatory system as a cause of disability in machine-works factories]
Insights
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of disability among 154 workers studied, particularly affecting older male manual laborers. Ischaemic heart disease poses the most severe risk, highlighting a critical occupational health concern.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health
- Cardiovascular Epidemiology
- Public Health
Context:
- Study conducted in a large engineering factory between 1986-1987.
- Analysis focused on 154 subjects with work-related invalidity.
- Cardiovascular diseases identified as the primary cause of invalidity.
Purpose:
- To determine the prevalence and characteristics of cardiovascular disease-related invalidity in an industrial workforce.
- To identify demographic and occupational factors associated with cardiovascular disease-induced work incapacity.
- To assess the specific impact of ischaemic heart disease on worker disability.
Summary:
- Cardiovascular diseases accounted for 31% of all invalidity cases in the studied cohort.
- The incidence rate of cardiovascular disease-related invalidity was approximately 2 per 1000 workers annually.
- Manual male workers aged 50 and above were most susceptible, with ischaemic heart disease being the most serious condition.
Impact:
- Findings underscore the significant burden of cardiovascular diseases on workforce productivity in industrial settings.
- Highlights the need for targeted occupational health interventions for male manual laborers, especially those over 50.
- Emphasizes the critical role of managing ischaemic heart disease risk in preventing work-related disability.
Abstract:
The author analyzes a group of 154 invalid subjects where the main cause of invalidity was cardiovascular disease. The investigation was made in a large engineering factory in 1986 and 1987. The group (92% men and 8% women) accounted for 31% of all invalid subjects. The incidence of invalidity on account of cardiovascular diseases per year was approximately 2/1000 workers. Invalidity on account of cardiovascular diseases affects in particular manual male workers, most frequently those aged 50 years and above. Most seriously and most frequently affected are patients with ischaemic heart disease.
