Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan

642
Radiological investigations are paramount in the diagnosis and management of various pulmonary diseases. Two essential investigations are the Pulmonary Angiogram and the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan.
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...

    Summary

Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) offers enhanced nuclear medicine breast imaging. This technique improves detection of small breast cancers, unaffected by tissue density or prior treatments.

    Area of Science:

    • Nuclear Medicine
    • Medical Imaging
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Traditional gamma cameras have limitations in breast imaging resolution and sensitivity.
    • Dense breast tissue, implants, and surgical scars can obscure cancers on standard imaging.
    • There is a need for advanced imaging techniques for early and accurate breast cancer detection.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the technical specifications and capabilities of Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI).
    • To highlight BSGI's advantages over traditional gamma cameras for breast cancer diagnosis.
    • To emphasize BSGI's high sensitivity and specificity in detecting small breast lesions.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilizes a high-resolution, small field-of-view scintilla detector with 3,073 individual crystals and 48 photomultiplier tubes.

  • Features a detector field-of-view (FOV) of 15 cm x 20 cm.
  • Achieves optimal system resolution of 3 mm for breast imaging.
  • Main Results:

    • BSGI can detect lesions as small as 2-3 mm in diameter.
    • Demonstrates superior sensitivity for detecting subcentimeter or nonpalpable breast cancers.
    • Imaging results are not affected by breast density, implants, architectural distortion, or surgical scars.

    Conclusions:

    • Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) is an advanced nuclear medicine technique optimizing breast imaging.
    • BSGI offers high resolution and sensitivity, crucial for detecting early-stage breast cancer.
    • Its independence from confounding factors makes it a valuable tool for comprehensive breast cancer diagnosis.
