Insights
Pediatric endocrine and metabolic emergencies are challenging. This review guides recognition and management of common, critical conditions in ill children.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Emergency Medicine
- Pediatric Endocrinology
- Metabolic Disorders
Background:
- Endocrine and metabolic emergencies pose significant diagnostic and management challenges in pediatric care.
- Prompt recognition and intervention are crucial for improving outcomes in critically ill children.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review common endocrine and metabolic emergencies encountered in pediatric emergency settings.
- To provide a practical guide for the recognition and management of these conditions.
Main Methods:
- Literature review of common pediatric endocrine and metabolic emergencies.
- Synthesis of current guidelines and expert recommendations for diagnosis and treatment.
Main Results:
- Common entities include diabetic ketoacidosis, adrenal insufficiency, and thyroid emergencies.
- Key management strategies involve rapid assessment, appropriate fluid resuscitation, and targeted hormonal or metabolic interventions.
Conclusions:
- Effective management requires a systematic approach tailored to the specific endocrine or metabolic crisis.
- Enhanced provider education and readily available protocols can improve care for these complex pediatric cases.
Abstract:
The presentation of endocrine and metabolic emergencies represents one of the more challenging clinical scenarios faced by pediatricians and emergency providers. In this review, the authors attempt to describe some of the more common entities that a provider may see and provide a guide for the recognition and management of these difficult-to-assess and often very ill children.
