    Summary

    Most babies surviving severe birth asphyxia (Apgar score ≤3) have good neurodevelopmental outcomes. Vigorous management at birth is crucial for improving the quality of life for these newborns.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the neurodevelopmental outcomes of neonates with varying degrees of birth asphyxia.
    • To identify factors associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective follow-up of 36 neonates with severe birth asphyxia, 32 with moderate birth asphyxia, and 35 controls.
    • Assessment of neurodevelopmental milestones and neurological signs.
    • Comparison of outcomes between asphyxia groups and controls.

    Main Results:

    • Fetal distress was more frequent in severe birth asphyxia cases (p<0.05).
    • Six neonates with severe birth asphyxia exhibited abnormal neurological signs.
    • Only two neonates with severe birth asphyxia showed delayed developmental milestones (Developmental Quotient <70) and cerebral palsy features, both experiencing seizures and requiring gavage feeding.

    Conclusions:

    • The majority of birth asphyxia survivors achieve a good quality of life.
    • Aggressive management of asphyxiated neonates at birth is essential for improving neurodevelopmental outcomes.
