Red Algae01:23

Red Algae

1.9K
Red algae, also known as rhodophytes, are primarily found in marine environments, though some species inhabit freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. These organisms exist in both unicellular and multicellular forms, with some multicellular varieties reaching macroscopic sizes. As phototrophic organisms, red algae contain chlorophyll a; however, their chloroplasts lack chlorophyll b. Instead, they possess phycobiliproteins, which serve as major light-harvesting pigments, similar to those found in...

Southern Blot

Agarose gel electrophoresis is very useful in separating DNA fragments by size. Running a DNA ladder containing fragments of the known length alongside the sample helps determine the approximate length of the sample DNA fragments. However, additional steps are needed to verify the sequence identity of the sample DNA fragments.
Denatured DNA fragments must be transferred onto a carrier membrane from the gel to make it accessible to a probe - a small ssDNA fragment complementary to the target DNA...

Conservation of Declining Populations

13.6K
Conservation of declining population focuses on ways of detecting, diagnosing, and halting a population decline. The approach uses methods to prevent populations from going extinct.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Dermatology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Congenital Anomalies

Background:

  • Mongolian blue spots, or congenital dermal melanocytosis, are common benign pigmented lesions typically found on the lumbosacral area of newborns.
  • Their occurrence outside of the typical distribution is infrequent.

Observation:

  • A 3-year-old child presented with a Mongolian blue spot.
  • The lesion was noted externally around the auricle (ear).
  • Intraoperatively, the spot was also observed on the tympanic membrane.

Findings:

  • This represents a rare instance of Mongolian blue spot involving both the external ear and the tympanic membrane.
  • The presence of the lesion on the tympanic membrane is highly unusual.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known spectrum of Mongolian blue spot presentation.
  • It underscores the importance of thorough examination in pediatric dermatology and otolaryngology.
  • Further research may be needed to understand the embryological basis for such atypical locations.
