Summary

Surgical treatment for concha bullosa related headache significantly improved patient quality of life compared to medical management. Endoscopic surgery offers a rapid resolution for this type of rhinogenic headache.

Background:

  • Rhinogenic headache (RH) is facial pain caused by sino-nasal mucosal contact points.
  • Concha bullosa, a pneumatized middle turbinate, is a common anatomical variation linked to RH.
  • RH significantly impacts patients' quality of life (QoL), with diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of medical versus surgical treatment on the QoL of patients with concha bullosa related headache.
  • To assess patient-reported outcomes following interventions for concha bullosa related headache.

Main Methods:

  • 102 subjects with concha bullosa and headache were randomized into medical or surgical treatment groups.
  • Quality of Life (QoL) was assessed using the visual analogue scale and migraine disability score.
  • Assessments were conducted before and after treatment for both groups.

Main Results:

  • The surgical group experienced a greater decrease in headache severity and discomfort compared to the medical group.
  • Endoscopic surgical plastic demonstrated a positive effect on symptom reduction.

Conclusions:
