Background:

  • SWITCH® is an evidence-based childhood obesity prevention program.
  • The program targets parenting practices through school-based interventions.
  • This study evaluated the equivalence of an online SWITCH® version compared to the print version.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a formative evaluation of the online SWITCH® program.
  • To determine if the online version is equivalent in effect to the print version.
  • To assess parent and child engagement with both program formats.

Main Methods:

  • Ten elementary schools were matched and randomized to print or online SWITCH®.
  • 211 third-grade children and their parents participated over 4 months.
  • Participants completed weekly trackers monitoring physical activity, screen time, and diet.

Main Results:

  • 93.2% of parents reported satisfactory experiences with both program versions.
  • Print version schools had a higher tracker return rate (42.5%) than online (27.4%).
  • No significant differences in parent/child interaction or reported behavior change were found.

Conclusions:

  • The online SWITCH® platform is a viable option for childhood obesity prevention.
  • School-based modules are recommended to enhance teacher engagement and program reach.
  • Further development is needed to optimize school-wide implementation.
