Ankle Joint01:10

Ankle Joint

3.7K
The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Foot and ankle reconstruction
  • Clinical outcomes research

Background:

  • Optimal management for bilateral ankle arthritis remains unclear.
  • Bilateral ankle arthritis significantly impacts patient function and quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate midterm patient satisfaction and functional outcomes following bilateral staged ankle arthrodesis.
  • To provide initial data on the efficacy of staged bilateral ankle fusion.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of eight patients undergoing bilateral staged ankle arthrodesis.
  • Assessment of fusion rates, time to fusion, and AOFAS hindfoot scores.
  • Patient-reported satisfaction surveys were collected.

Main Results:

  • All eight patients achieved successful fusion with a median fusion time of 12.8 weeks.
  • Median AOFAS hindfoot score was 79.5, indicating good functional outcome.
  • 75% of patients reported high satisfaction; two developed symptomatic subtalar arthritis.

Conclusions:

  • Bilateral ankle arthrodesis provides good functional results and high patient satisfaction in the medium term.
  • This study is the first to report outcomes of bilateral ankle arthritis independently.
  • Subtalar joint involvement should be monitored post-bilateral ankle fusion.
