Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Endocrinology
  • Clinical Gynecology

Background:

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder affecting reproductive-aged women.
  • Long-term evolution and prognostic factors in PCOS require further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify clinical and endocrine factors influencing the long-term prognosis of women with PCOS.
  • To compare patient data based on the presence or absence of disorders at the end of an observation period.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal study involving 64 women diagnosed with PCOS.
  • Patients were categorized into two groups based on the presence (Group A) or absence (Group B) of disorders at follow-up.
  • Clinical and endocrine data from initial observations were compared between groups.

Main Results:

  • The primary significant difference identified was the timing of menstrual irregularities.
  • In Group A (disorders present), menstrual irregularities coincided with menarche in only 57.6% of cases.
  • In Group B (no disorders), menstrual irregularities coincided with menarche in a significantly higher 94.7% of cases.

Conclusions:

  • The onset of menstrual irregularities at menarche is a potential indicator of long-term PCOS prognosis.
  • Earlier onset of menstrual irregularities may be associated with the persistence of disorders in PCOS.
  • This finding could aid in stratifying PCOS patients for tailored management strategies.
