Summary

Maximal aerobic speed (MAS) can be predicted using time-trials (TT) of 1200-2200m, with 2000m being optimal. This offers a simpler alternative to traditional MAS testing for athletes.

Background:

  • Optimizing training in aerobic sports requires knowledge of aerobic performance capacity.
  • Maximal aerobic speed (MAS) is a key measure, but traditional protocols are time- and personnel-intensive.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if shorter time-trials (TT) can effectively predict MAS.
  • To determine if TTs are a less demanding alternative to traditional MAS testing.

Main Methods:

  • 28 Australian Rules football players underwent MAS testing.
  • Players completed randomized TTs of 1200m, 1400m, 1600m, 1800m, 2000m, or 2200m.
  • TTs were separated by at least 48 hours.

Main Results:

  • TT speeds at 1600m, 1800m, 2000m, and 2200m did not differ significantly from MAS.
  • Average speed across all TT distances correlated with MAS (r=0.69-0.84).
  • The 2000m TT showed the best agreement with MAS.

Conclusions:

  • MAS can be predicted from TT average speed over 1200m to 2200m.
  • A 2000m TT is the optimal distance for predicting MAS.
  • TT performance offers a practical alternative for assessing MAS.
