Summary

Background:

  • Reconstructing full-thickness lower lip defects after squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) excisions presents significant challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the functional outcomes of the modified Bernard-Webster flap for reconstructing full-thickness lower lip defects exceeding one-third of the lip length following SCC excision.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study included patients undergoing lower lip reconstruction with the modified Bernard-Webster flap between 2011 and 2013.
  • Functional results, including sphincter, motor, and sensory functions, were assessed postoperatively using established criteria.

Main Results:

  • Twelve defects were reconstructed with minimal complications; two cases of wound dehiscence were successfully managed.
