Background:

  • Ischemic stroke (IS) in young adults (18-50 years) presents unique challenges for long-term recovery.
  • Understanding the relationship between cognitive function and functional outcomes is crucial for effective rehabilitation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of cognitive performance on long-term functional outcomes in young adults following ischemic stroke.
  • To identify specific cognitive domains that predict functional recovery after young IS.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective cohort study of 277 young IS survivors.
  • Functional outcomes assessed using modified Rankin Scale (mRS) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) scales.
  • Extensive neuropsychological testing and logistic regression analysis to determine associations between cognitive domains and functional outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Decline in working memory was associated with poor mRS outcomes.
  • Decline in processing speed and working memory showed a relation to poor IADL outcomes.
