Abstract:
Paints and coatings have been recognized as a useful type of forensic evidence for several decades. During this time the materials themselves, the analytical methods used to examine them, and the legal environment surrounding the use of scientific evidence in courts have all changed. This paper is not intended to provide a comprehensive bibliography on the topic, but rather to provide a concise overview of past and current trends in the forensic examination of paints and coatings in light of these changes.
