Background:

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major global cause of cancer mortality.
  • High rates of postoperative recurrence and metastasis contribute to HCC-related deaths.
  • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs regulating gene expression post-transcriptionally.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression levels of miR-148a in HCC tissues.
  • To determine the correlation between miR-148a expression and clinicopathological parameters in HCC.
  • To evaluate miR-148a as a potential prognostic biomarker for HCC.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to measure miR-148a expression.
  • Ninety-six HCC samples and adjacent non-cancerous tissues were analyzed.
  • Correlation analysis and multivariate Cox proportional hazards model were employed.

Main Results:

  • miR-148a expression was significantly down-regulated in HCC tissues compared to normal tissues.
  • Reduced miR-148a levels were associated with advanced TNM stage, metastasis, and increased tumor node number.
  • Low miR-148a expression was an independent predictor of HCC recurrence.
