  • To investigate complications, physiological responses, and exercise patterns during simulated competitive exercise in older, active non-athletes.
  • To compare these responses with those during maximal incremental exercise.
  • To inform physician guidance on competitive exercise for cardiac patients.

Main Methods:

  • Fourteen trained older males (7 with stable cardiovascular disease) underwent incremental exercise testing and a simulated competitive time trial.
  • Tests were performed on a semirecumbent stepping ergometer.
  • Measurements included gas exchange, hemodynamics, perceived exertion, and power output.

Main Results:

  • High physiological and psychological strain was achieved in both tests without abnormalities.
  • Peak physiological responses did not differ significantly between simulated competition and incremental exercise.
  • A distinct pacing strategy was observed during the time trial: conservative start, even middle, and end spurt.

Conclusions:

  • Trained individuals with normal incremental exercise test results can participate in competitive-level exercise without apparent side effects.
  • Findings support physicians advising patients on competitive event participation.
  • This study provides a basis for managing exercise intensity and competition in older adults with cardiac history.
