Summary
Endometriosis rarely affects the appendix. This case report details a patient with acute appendicitis and hemoperitoneum due to endometrial infiltration of the appendix, a first reported complication.
Area of Science:
- Gynecology
- Gastroenterology
- Pathology
Background:
- Endometriosis is a condition where endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus, typically causing pelvic pain.
- While rare, endometriosis can affect other body parts, including the appendix.
- Appendiceal endometriosis is uncommon, with a reported incidence of 0.8%.
Observation:
- A 39-year-old woman presented with symptoms mimicking acute appendicitis.
- Diagnostic imaging, including ultrasonography and CT scans, confirmed appendicitis.
- During laparoscopic appendectomy, hemoperitoneum was noted without other discernible abdominal or pelvic lesions.
Findings:
- Histopathological examination of the appendix revealed acute appendicitis with endometrial glands and stroma infiltrating the muscularis propria.
- This infiltration led to the observed hemoperitoneum, a complication not previously documented in appendiceal endometriosis cases.
- The patient recovered fully and was discharged within 48 hours post-surgery.
Implications:
- This case highlights the potential for appendiceal endometriosis to present with acute abdominal symptoms and hemoperitoneum.
- It underscores the importance of considering endometriosis in the differential diagnosis of acute appendicitis, especially in women of reproductive age.
- This report represents the first documented instance of hemoperitoneum associated with endometriosis of the appendix, expanding the known clinical spectrum of the disease.

Appendicitis-I: Introduction
3.7K
The appendix, a small, narrow, blind tube extending from the inferior part of the cecum, is widely regarded as a vestigial organ, having lost much of its original function through evolution. Despite its diminished role, the appendix can become inflamed, a condition known as appendicitis.
Etiology: Appendicitis can arise from various causes, primarily rooted in the obstruction of the appendix lumen. Factors contributing to this obstruction include fecal accumulation, lymphoid hyperplasia and, in...

Appendicitis-II: Diagnostic Studies and Management

Diagnosing and managing appendicitis requires a structured and comprehensive approach that spans from initial assessment to postoperative care. Here is an overview of the process:
Diagnosing Appendicitis
It requires a multifaceted approach, starting with a detailed physical examination to pinpoint the location and nature of the pain and identify any associated symptoms. Laboratory tests play a crucial role. A complete Blood Count (CBC) typically reveals leukocytosis (an increased number of...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis
1.4K
Introduction
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...

Acute pancreatitis presents a complex medical emergency characterized by rapid onset inflammation of the pancreas, demanding timely diagnosis and management to prevent complications. The condition primarily manifests through severe upper abdominal pain that often radiates to the back. This pain intensifies following the consumption of fatty foods. Accompanying symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, fever, dyspnea, cyanosis, and jaundice can vary in intensity but significantly...

Introduction
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.
