Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Vascular Medicine

Context:

  • Primary lymphedema is a chronic condition affecting lymphatic fluid drainage.
  • Pregnancy can exacerbate pre-existing conditions in women.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the progression of primary lymphedema during and after pregnancies.
  • To determine if pregnancy influences the reversibility of primary lymphedema.

Summary:

  • Retrospective analysis of 15 female patients with primary lymphedema.
  • Lymphedema showed initial reversibility after the first and second pregnancies.
  • Irreversible lymphedema was observed by the third pregnancy.

Impact:

  • Highlights the potential for pregnancy to induce irreversible primary lymphedema.
  • Suggests closer monitoring of lymphedema patients during pregnancy.
  • Informs clinical management strategies for pregnant women with lymphedema.
