Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

2.3K
The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Parentral Nutrition: Centeral and Peripheral Parental Nutrition

1.6K
Parenteral Nutrition (PN) delivers essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system. It is commonly used for individuals with severe digestive disorders or conditions that prevent normal nutrient absorption.
PN can be administered through two primary routes:
1. Central Parenteral Nutrition (CPN):
CPN involves delivering a high concentration of nutrients through a large vein. This is typically achieved using a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) or,...

Obesity

1.5K
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Health
  • Health Promotion

Background:

  • Physical inactivity and unhealthy eating are critical public health challenges in developed nations.
  • Early adoption of these behaviors significantly impacts long-term health outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review school-based physical activity and/or nutrition programs for adolescents in Spain.
  • Focus on programs implemented and published within the last 15 years.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted a systematic literature search across major Spanish and international databases (Web of Science, ERIC, PsycINFO, Dialnet, ISOC).
  • Adhered to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines.
  • Included 13 studies meeting specific inclusion criteria from an initial 522 references.

Main Results:

  • The most common programs involved family participation.
  • Physical Education teachers and health personnel were key implementers and facilitators.
  • All reviewed programs demonstrated improvement in at least one targeted health variable.

Conclusions:

  • Only 13 school-based intervention programs addressing physical activity and/or nutrition in adolescents were identified in Spain over 15 years.
  • All identified programs successfully improved health behaviors.
  • Schools play a crucial role in establishing and enhancing healthy habits among adolescents.
