Additive solutions differentially affect metabolic and functional parameters of platelet concentrates

Background:

• Pathogen inactivation (PI) extends platelet concentrate shelf life to 7 days.
• Platelet additive solutions (PAS) are essential for this extended storage.

Purpose of the Study:

• To evaluate the quality of platelets stored for up to 7 days in three different PAS.
• To compare the effects of Composol®, SSP+®, and Intersol™ on platelet quality.

Main Methods:

• Platelet concentrates (PCs) were divided and resuspended in three PAS (Composol®, SSP+®, Intersol™).
• Quality parameters including pH, glucose, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), lactate, mean platelet volume (MPV), and aggregation response were measured on days 1, 5, and 7.
• P-selectin expression was assessed to determine platelet activation.

• No significant changes in pH or MPV were observed across all PAS during storage.
• Glucose decreased, while LDH and lactate increased over time, particularly in Intersol™ PCs.

Conclusions:

• Storing platelets in Intersol™ for 7 days leads to increased platelet activation and metabolism.
