Summary

Choosing the right color difference formula is crucial for restorative prostheses. The CMC(1:1) and CIEDE2000 formulas accurately assess color stability in acrylic resins, outperforming CIELab.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Color Science
  • Biomaterials Engineering

Background:

  • Accurate color assessment is vital for restorative prostheses.
  • Quantifying color change in acrylic resins requires appropriate color difference formulas.
  • The selection of a suitable formula for color stability assessment is not straightforward.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify the optimal color difference formula for evaluating color changes in acrylic resins.
  • To establish perceptibility and acceptability thresholds for color stability in denture base acrylic resins.
  • To compare the performance of different International Commission on Illumination (CIE) color difference formulas.

Main Methods:

  • Fabrication of 291 acrylic resin denture base plates and radiation testing (ISO 7491:2000).
  • Color measurement using a portable spectrophotometer.
  • Calculation of color differences using CIELab, CMC(1:1), and CIEDE2000 formulas.
  • Psychophysical perceptibility and acceptability assessments by 34 observers.
  • Analysis of receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves and area under the curve (AUC) values.

Main Results:

  • CMC(1:1) and CIEDE2000 formulas demonstrated superior performance in quantifying imperceptible to unacceptable color differences.
  • Perceptibility thresholds were 2.52 for CMC(1:1) and 1.72 for CIEDE2000.
  • Acceptability thresholds were 6.21 for CMC(1:1) and 4.08 for CIEDE2000.

Conclusions:

  • CMC(1:1) and CIEDE2000 formulas offer higher discriminability for assessing perceptible color differences in denture base acrylic resin compared to CIELab.
  • A significant statistical difference was observed between perceptibility and acceptability thresholds for color stability in denture base acrylic resin.
