Summary

Healthy older adults show slightly elevated serum levels of certain inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNF-R1) compared to younger individuals. These findings suggest a need to adjust normal ranges for these markers in the elderly.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate age-related dynamics in serum levels of key inflammatory markers: interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), IL-6 receptor (IL-6R), TNF receptor 1 (TNF-R1), and CRP.
  • To compare these marker levels between younger (<65 years) and older (≥65 years) healthy individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Serum samples were collected from healthy individuals aged 20-90 years, stratified by decade and by age groups <65 and ≥65 years.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to quantify IL-6, IL-8, TNF, IL-6R, and TNF-R1.
  • C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured using an immunoturbidimetric method.

Main Results:

  • While serum CRP and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels were generally low and within normal ranges in all healthy participants, they were significantly higher in the 60-70 year age group compared to younger groups.
  • Serum TNF-R1 levels were notably higher in the 70-90 year age group compared to all other age groups.
  • Participants aged ≥65 years exhibited higher serum levels of IL-6, CRP, and TNF-R1 compared to those <65 years.

Conclusions:

  • Healthy aging is characterized by low but slightly elevated serum levels of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines and CRP compared to younger adults.
  • The observed age-related increases in CRP and TNF-R1 suggest that current normal ranges for these markers may need adjustment for the elderly population.
  • Significant elevations in these markers beyond the adjusted normal ranges in older adults could indicate underlying pathological conditions.
