Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

9.9K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Super-resolution Fluorescence Microscopy01:37

Super-resolution Fluorescence Microscopy

14.8K
Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy (SRFM) provides a better resolution than conventional fluorescence microscopy by reducing the point spread function (PSF). PSF is the light intensity distribution from a point that causes it to appear blurred. Due to PSF, each fluorescing point appears bigger than its actual size, and it is the PSF interference of nearby fluorophores that causes the blurred image. Various approaches to achieving higher resolution through SRFM have recently been...

Confocal Fluorescence Microscopy01:16

Confocal Fluorescence Microscopy

22.1K
Confocal microscopy is an advanced microscopic technique. The prime advantage of the confocal microscope over other microscopy techniques is its ability to block the out-of-focus light from the illuminated samples using pinholes. It is widely used with fluorescence optics to obtain high-resolution, sharp contrast images. Unlike optical microscopes, confocal microscopes use a focused beam of light laser to scan the entire sample surface at different z-planes. These microscopes are, therefore,...

Imaging Biological Samples with Optical Microscopy01:18

Imaging Biological Samples with Optical Microscopy

12.2K
Optical microscopy uses optic principles to provide detailed images of samples. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek designed the first compound optical microscope in the 17th century to visualize blood cells, bacteria, and yeast cells. In 1830, Joseph Jackson Lister created an essentially modern light microscope. The 20th century saw the development of microscopes with enhanced magnification and resolution.
In optical microscopy, the specimen to be viewed is placed on a glass slide and clipped on the stage...

    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Photonics
    • Computational Imaging
    • Computer Vision

    Background:

    • Light field capture aims for high angular and spatial resolution cost-effectively.
    • Traditional methods often involve trade-offs between angular and spatial resolution.
    • Coded apertures offer a way to multiplex views, potentially overcoming resolution limitations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose an improved light field camera model.
    • To enhance light field reconstruction quality and light efficiency.
    • To avoid the typical trade-off between angular and spatial resolution in light field capture.

    Main Methods:

    • Developed a light field camera model with double compressive measurements and a single mask.
    • Implemented compressive measurements using a coded aperture and a random convolution CMOS imager.
    • Utilized a single mask design for high light efficiency and sampling clarity.

    Main Results:

    • The proposed model achieved higher reconstruction quality compared to representative mask-based light field cameras.
    • Demonstrated higher light efficiency due to the single mask design.
    • The double measurement strategy preserved more correlation information, improving the reconstructed light field.

    Conclusions:

    • The improved light field camera design effectively enhances reconstruction quality and light efficiency.
    • The proposed method successfully avoids the resolution trade-off inherent in many light field capture systems.
    • This approach offers a promising direction for high-performance, cost-effective light field acquisition.
