Mouse Models of Cancer Study02:43

Mouse Models of Cancer Study

6.7K
Mice have long served as models for studying human biology and pathology because of their phylogenetic and physiological similarity with humans. They are also easy to maintain and breed in the laboratory, and hence, many inbred strains are now available for research. Studies on mice have contributed immeasurably to our understanding of cancer biology.
The development of transgenic, knockout, and knock-in mice has led to an exponential increase in their use as model organisms in research,...

Genetic Screens02:46

Genetic Screens

5.9K
Genetic screens are tools used to identify genes and mutations responsible for phenotypes of interest. Genetic screens help identify individuals or a group of people at risk of developing  genetic diseases and help them with early intervention, targeted therapy, and reproductive options.
Forward genetic screens
Forward or “classical” genetic screens involve creating random mutations in an organism’s DNA using radiation, mutagens, or insertion of additional bases, which...

Incomplete Dominance01:43

Incomplete Dominance

32.6K
Gregor Mendel's work (1822 - 1884) was primarily focused on pea plants. Through his initial experiments, he determined that every gene in a diploid cell has two variants called alleles inherited from each parent. He suggested that amongst these two alleles, one allele is dominant in character and the other recessive. The combination of alleles determines the phenotype of a gene in an organism.

Area of Science:

  • Genomics
  • Phenomics
  • Bioinformatics

Background:

  • The Mouse Phenome Database (MPD) was initially developed to integrate phenotype data from a standard set of 40 inbred mouse strains.
  • Expansion of mouse models, including the Collaborative Cross and Diversity Outbred mice, necessitates advanced data integration capabilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the evolution and expanded capabilities of the Mouse Phenome Database.
  • To highlight its role in integrating diverse mouse phenotype data from various genetic backgrounds and experimental conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Centralized curation of primary phenotype data and associated metadata.
  • Development of a framework for data retrieval, integration, analysis, and display.
  • Ensuring data accuracy and reproducibility through standardized protocols.

Main Results:

  • The MPD now accommodates data from new mouse populations, including crosses and genetically diverse models.
  • Provides a unified platform for analyzing phenotype data in the context of genetic variation.
  • Facilitates community data sharing and integration for a wide range of research.

Conclusions:

  • The Mouse Phenome Database is an evolving, comprehensive resource for mouse phenotype data.
  • It supports researchers in studying the phenotypic consequences of genetic variation across diverse mouse models.
  • Encourages submission of new data to enhance its value as a community resource.
