  • Understanding the relationship between bruxism patterns and condylar morphology is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between different sleep bruxism (SB) grinding patterns and mandibular condylar morphology.
  • To determine if specific grinding behaviors correlate with deviations in condylar shape or position.

Main Methods:

  • Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to assess condylar morphology and position in 30 subjects.
  • Grinding patterns during sleep were objectively measured using a Brux-checker device.
  • Statistical analyses included chi-square tests and Spearman's rank correlation.

Main Results:

  • 35% of subjects exhibited condylar morphology divergent from ideal.
  • A significant difference in condylar morphology distribution was observed between those with general grinding (GG) and those with GG plus mediotrusive side grinding (MG) (p < 0.05).
  • No significant correlation was found between condylar position and canine guidance area during bruxism.

Conclusions:

  • Mediotrusive side grinding during sleep bruxism is associated with non-ideal mandibular condylar morphology.
  • These findings suggest that specific bruxism behaviors may influence TMJ structural adaptations.
