    Summary

Psoriasis patients showed a higher incidence of multiple sclerosis (MS) than the general population. Psoriasis onset preceded MS and did not correlate with disease severity or neurological decline.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Neurology
    • Dermatology

    Context:

    • Investigates the co-occurrence of multiple sclerosis (MS) and psoriasis.
    • Examines the incidence of psoriasis in a cohort of MS patients.

    Purpose:

    • To determine if there is a higher incidence of psoriasis in patients with multiple sclerosis.
    • To explore the relationship between the onset of psoriasis and the progression of multiple sclerosis.

    Summary:

    • The study observed three cases of psoriasis among 51 patients with probable multiple sclerosis, indicating a higher incidence (1 in 17) compared to the general population (1 in 33).
    • In all cases, psoriasis developed prior to the onset of remitting multiple sclerosis and showed no correlation with neurological exacerbations or functional loss.
    • The discussion includes the role of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) histocompatibility antigens, immunopathological, and biochemical factors common to both conditions.

    Impact:

    • Highlights a potential link between psoriasis and multiple sclerosis, suggesting shared underlying mechanisms.
    • Provides insights into the temporal relationship between these two immune-mediated diseases.
    • Suggests further research into the immunogenetics and pathophysiology of comorbid MS and psoriasis.
