Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure serum folic acid (FA) levels in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED).
  • To evaluate the potential association between serum FA levels and the severity of erectile dysfunction.

Main Methods:

  • 120 male patients with ED (severe, moderate, mild) and 40 healthy controls were enrolled.
  • Fasting serum samples were analyzed for total testosterone, cholesterol, and folic acid (FA) using chemiluminescent immunoassays.
  • Demographic, anthropometric, and biochemical parameters were compared across groups.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in age, BMI, total testosterone, or cholesterol were observed among groups.
  • Mean serum FA concentrations were significantly lower in severe (7.2 ± 3.7 ng/ml) and moderate (7.1 ± 3.2 ng/ml) ED groups compared to controls (10.7 ± 4.6 ng/ml).
  • Serum FA levels in the mild ED group (10.2 ± 4.6 ng/ml) were not significantly different from controls.

Conclusions:

  • Serum folic acid (FA) deficiency may be associated with the severity of erectile dysfunction (ED).
  • Lower FA levels in patients with moderate to severe ED suggest a potential role in ED pathogenesis or as a biomarker.
