Main Methods:

  • fMRI was used to assess 88 incarcerated males (28 with high psychopathy scores) viewing harmful and helpful social interactions.
  • Two tasks, implicit and explicit, were employed to manipulate attentional demands during moral evaluation.
  • Neural activity and functional connectivity were analyzed in relation to psychopathy severity (Psychopathy Checklist Revised - PCL-R scores).

Main Results:

  • High psychopathy was linked to reduced activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and caudate during implicit tasks.
  • Decreased functional connectivity was observed between the amygdala/temporoparietal junction and regions like the ACC and insula in high psychopathy.
  • Explicit tasks showed reduced ACC and amygdala signal change, with altered connectivity patterns, in higher psychopathy, despite no behavioral differences.

Conclusions:

  • Psychopathy disrupts hemodynamic activity and neural coupling within the salience network.
  • Attentional demands modulate the impact of psychopathy on moral evaluation.
  • Neural differences in psychopathy persist regardless of behavioral performance.
