Nephrotic syndrome can be caused by medications. A patient with Crohn's disease developed membranous glomerulopathy while on adalimumab, which resolved after stopping the drug.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Immunology
Background:
- Nephrotic syndrome presents a diverse differential diagnosis.
- Systemic conditions and medications, including NSAIDs, can precipitate nephrotic syndrome.
Observation:
- A 33-year-old male with Crohn's disease on adalimumab developed nephrotic syndrome with membranous glomerulopathy.
- Secondary causes of membranous glomerulopathy were excluded.
Findings:
- Treatment with high-dose glucocorticoids and adalimumab discontinuation led to complete remission.
- A likely association between adalimumab use and the development of membranous glomerulopathy was identified.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of considering medication side effects in nephrotic syndrome.
- Thorough exclusion of primary and secondary causes, including drug-induced cases, is crucial for managing membranous glomerulopathy.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Crohn's Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.
