Dry eye syndrome (DES) is common in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients, affecting 79% of newly diagnosed individuals and 84% on beta blocker therapy. Preservative-containing eye drops worsen DES symptoms in POAG patients.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Glaucoma Research
- Dry Eye Disease
Background:
- Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness.
- Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a common ocular surface condition.
- Ocular hypotensive therapy, including beta blockers, is standard for POAG management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the prevalence and severity of DES in POAG patients.
- To compare DES in newly diagnosed POAG patients versus those on beta blocker therapy.
- To assess the impact of topical beta blockers on DES in POAG.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 127 POAG patients (190 eyes) was studied.
- Group 1: 55 newly diagnosed POAG patients.
- Group 2: 72 POAG patients on timolol 0.5% eye drops twice daily.
- Control group: 20 age-matched cataract patients.
Main Results:
- DES was diagnosed in 79% of newly diagnosed POAG patients.
- DES was present in 84% of POAG patients using topical beta blockers.
- No statistically significant difference in DES prevalence between the two POAG groups (p = 0.39).
Conclusions:
- Newly diagnosed POAG patients frequently have pre-existing dry eye.
- Topical beta blockers, particularly those with preservatives, can exacerbate dry eye in POAG patients.
- Ophthalmologists should consider DES when initiating ocular hypotensive therapy for POAG.
