Summary

Simultaneous light-curing using two units for orthodontic brackets offers comparable bond strength to conventional methods. Avoid single-sided curing, as it significantly reduces bracket-to-enamel bond strength.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Orthodontic Technology
  • Biomaterials Engineering

Background:

  • Orthodontic bracket bonding relies on resin cements and effective photoactivation.
  • Optimizing light-curing protocols is crucial for achieving durable bonds and preventing clinical failures.
  • Current methods may have limitations in ensuring complete cement polymerization, especially in challenging areas.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic brackets bonded to enamel using a modified photoactivation protocol.
  • To compare the efficacy of simultaneous dual-unit light-curing versus conventional single-unit methods.
  • To assess the impact of different photoactivation strategies on bond durability after thermal cycling.

Main Methods:

  • Metal brackets were bonded to bovine incisors using Transbond XT orthodontic cement.
  • Four photoactivation protocols were tested: conventional (10s/side), simultaneous (10s/both sides), one side (20s), and one side (10s).
  • Shear bond strength was measured immediately and after 1000 thermal cycles; Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was assessed.

Main Results:

  • Simultaneous photoactivation (9.7 MPa) and conventional methods (10.2 MPa) showed comparable SBS.
  • Single-sided photoactivation resulted in significantly lower SBS (5.6 MPa for 20s, 4.6 MPa for 10s).
  • Thermal cycling generally increased SBS, with a shift in ARI scores towards less adhesive remaining on the tooth.

Conclusions:

  • Simultaneous photoactivation with two light-curing units is a viable alternative to conventional methods for bonding orthodontic brackets.
  • Single-sided photoactivation protocols are insufficient and not recommended for ensuring adequate bracket adhesion.
  • Optimized photoactivation strategies are essential for reliable and long-lasting orthodontic bracket bonds.
