Localized lower extremity ischemic preconditioning (IPC) significantly reduces deep vein thrombosis (DVT) formation in rats. This study shows IPC is a promising protective strategy against thrombosis in the lower extremities.

- 41 male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into IPC and sham groups.
- IPC group received 4 cycles of 5-min ischemia/reperfusion before left iliac vein ligation.
- Thrombus weight, length, and density were measured post-ligation.

- IPC significantly reduced thrombus weight, length, and density compared to the control group.
- Thrombus weight decreased from 2.73 ± 0.16 mg to 1.82 ± 0.13 mg (P < 0.001).
- Thrombus length decreased from 2.99 ± 0.17 mm to 2.44 ± 0.08 mm (P < 0.009).
Conclusions:
- Localized lower extremity IPC effectively reduces DVT formation in an experimental thrombosis model.
- IPC demonstrates potential as a protective intervention against deep vein thrombosis.
