Background:

Ireland lacked a system to monitor trauma care processes and outcomes.
The National Office of Clinical Audit (NOCA) is implementing Major Trauma Audit (MTA).
MTA utilizes the established UK National Health Service (NHS) Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN).

Purpose of the Study:

To document the implementation process of MTA in Ireland.
To raise national awareness of MTA.
To share lessons for other health systems developing MTA.

Main Methods:

Adaptation of the UK TARN system for Ireland, advised by the National Trauma Audit Committee.
Endorsement by the Emergency Medicine Program in 2012, with MTA as the first audit project.
Establishment of a major trauma governance group, recruitment of a national project co-ordinator, and nomination of clinical leads.

25 out of 27 trauma-receiving hospitals are actively collecting data via the TARN platform.
