Summary

The Dynamic Rotator Stability Test (DRST) shows good intra-rater and moderate inter-rater reliability for shoulder conditions. However, its concurrent validity with the PENN Shoulder Score was found to be poor.

Background:

  • Shoulder pain is a common musculoskeletal condition.
  • Reliable and valid clinical tests are crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • The Dynamic Rotator Stability Test (DRST) is a newer assessment tool for shoulder conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the Dynamic Rotator Stability Test (DRST).
  • To determine the concurrent validity of the DRST by comparing it with the University of Pennsylvania Shoulder Score (PENN).

Main Methods:

  • 40 patients (18-70 years) with musculoskeletal shoulder pain were recruited.
  • The DRST and PENN scale were administered by two testers.
  • Inter-rater reliability was assessed on a subgroup of 20 patients.
  • Measurements were taken using a universal goniometer.

Main Results:

  • The DRST demonstrated high intra-rater reliability (correlation coefficient .94-1).
  • Inter-rater reliability for the DRST was significant (correlation coefficient .71-1) for several variables.
  • The DRST showed only poor to moderate correlation with the PENN Shoulder Score (P=.320-.450).

  • The DRST exhibits good intra-rater and moderate inter-rater reliability.
  • The concurrent validity of the DRST against the PENN Shoulder Score is poor.
  • Further research may be needed to establish the clinical utility of the DRST.
