    Summary

    Iron deficiency anaemia impairs renal function, measured by three-hour creatinine clearance (THCC). Intravenous iron-dextran therapy significantly improves THCC within three days, independent of haemoglobin levels.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess renal function in patients with iron deficiency anaemia.
    • To evaluate the effect of intravenous iron-dextran therapy on renal function.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty patients with iron deficiency anaemia underwent assessment of three-hour creatinine clearance (THCC).
    • Renal function and haemoglobin levels were measured before and three days after total dose intravenous iron-dextran therapy.
    • Paired 't' test was used for statistical analysis.

    Main Results:

    • Pre-therapy haemoglobin and THCC values showed no significant differences between measurements.
    • No significant difference was observed between pre- and post-therapy mean haemoglobin levels.
    • A statistically significant improvement in THCC was observed post-therapy (p < 0.01).

    Conclusions:

    • Renal function, as indicated by THCC, is impaired in iron deficiency anaemia.
    • Intravenous iron-dextran therapy significantly improves renal function within three days, irrespective of haemoglobin changes.
    • The improvement suggests a direct effect of iron on tissue function beyond anaemia correction.
