  • Initial assessment suggested chemoradiation therapy due to intolerance for surgery.
  • The patient expressed a strong desire for surgical intervention.

Findings:

  • A comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation program, including nutritional therapy and breathing physiotherapy, was implemented for approximately one month.
  • Pulmonary function tests showed significant improvement: vital capacity increased to 2,010 ml and FEV1.0 to 1,040 ml.
  • Following rehabilitation, the patient underwent a successful left lingulectomy with no postoperative complications.

Implications:

  • Preoperative pulmonary rehabilitation can enhance lung function in patients with poor respiratory capacity, potentially enabling surgical candidacy.
  • This case highlights the importance of considering individualized rehabilitation strategies for lung cancer patients.
  • Successful surgical outcomes can be achieved even in patients initially deemed unfit for surgery, improving long-term prognosis.
