Summary

Pre- and post-operative Timed-Up-and-Go (TUG) tests predict hospital length of stay and functional recovery after hip or knee arthroplasty. The WOMAC function subscale also predicts short-term functional recovery.

  • To evaluate the predictive value of TUG, Iowa, QOR, RHD, WOMAC, and OARS in hip/knee arthroplasty patients.

  • 108 hip/knee arthroplasty patients underwent peri-operative assessments.
  • Functional assessments included Timed-Up-and-Go (TUG), Iowa level of assistance, Quality of Recovery (QOR) scale, Readiness for Hospital Discharge (RHD) scale, and WOMAC.
  • The Older Americans Resources and Services (OARS) Activities of Daily Living (ADL) questionnaire assessed function two weeks post-discharge.

Main Results:

  • Pre- and post-operative day two TUG significantly predicted LOS and OARS scores.
  • Pre-operative WOMAC function subscale scores predicted OARS scores.
  • Specific TUG and WOMAC cut-off scores demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity for predicting LOS and functional recovery.

  • The TUG test (pre- and post-operative day two) is a valuable predictor of hospital LOS and short-term functional capacity.
  • The pre-operative WOMAC function subscale also predicts short-term functional capacity.
  • These functional assessments can aid in optimizing patient care and expectations following arthroplasty.
