The modified Broström procedure for chronic lateral ankle instability yields similar positive outcomes in both men and women. This surgical technique is effective regardless of gender, showing comparable functional and radiographic results.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Sports Medicine
- Anatomy
Background:
- Chronic lateral ankle instability is frequently treated with the modified Broström procedure.
- Previous studies have not investigated gender-based differences in outcomes following this procedure.
- This study aimed to compare the outcomes of the modified Broström procedure between men and women.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of the modified Broström procedure in male and female patients.
- To determine if gender influences the effectiveness of the modified Broström procedure for chronic lateral ankle instability.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective comparative cohort study included 155 patients (155 ankles) undergoing the modified Broström procedure.
- Patients were divided into a men's group (94 ankles) and a women's group (61 ankles).
- Outcomes were assessed using the Karlsson score, American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score, talar tilt, and anterior talar translation, with a mean follow-up of 42.8 months.
Main Results:
- Both men and women showed significant improvements in Karlsson and AOFAS scores post-surgery.
- Radiographic measures, including talar tilt and anterior talar translation, also demonstrated significant improvement in both groups.
- No statistically significant differences were observed between men and women in any of the evaluated clinical or radiographic outcomes.
Conclusions:
- The modified Broström procedure demonstrates comparable and favorable functional and radiographic outcomes in both male and female patients.
- Gender does not appear to be a significant factor affecting the success of the modified Broström procedure for chronic lateral ankle instability.
- The procedure is deemed effective and reliable for treating chronic lateral ankle instability across genders.
