Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of gastric electrical stimulation (GES) in patients diagnosed with gastroparesis-like syndrome (GLS).

Main Methods:

  • 551 patients with gastroparesis symptoms underwent gastric scintigraphy, categorizing them into delayed, normal, or rapid gastric emptying.
  • 379 of these patients received temporary gastric electrical stimulation (tGES).
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms and gastric emptying were compared before and after tGES implantation.

Main Results:

  • Temporary GES led to decreased 2-hour gastric retention in patients with delayed emptying.
  • Temporary GES increased 2-hour gastric retention in patients with normal and rapid emptying.

  • Gastric electrical stimulation (GES) demonstrates potential as an effective treatment for gastroparesis symptoms, particularly in cases with normal gastric emptying.
  • Further research into endoscopic electrical stimulation for GLS, especially with non-delayed gastric emptying, is recommended.
