Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

547
Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.

Complement System01:27

Complement System

12.7K
The complement system is a group of approximately 20 plasma proteins that strengthen the body's defenses against infections through opsonization, inflammation, and cell lysis. Opsonization involves coating pathogens with complement proteins, making them more recognizable and facilitating phagocyte engulfment. Certain complement proteins induce inflammation that attracts immune cells to the site of infection. Cell lysis involves the destruction of pathogens through the formation of a...

Insufficient Sleep and Sleep Deprivation01:13

Insufficient Sleep and Sleep Deprivation

1.3K
Insufficient sleep refers to not getting the recommended amount of sleep for optimal functioning, even if it's just slightly less than needed. Sleep insufficiency may occur due to lifestyle choices, such as staying up late for social events or work, resulting in routinely getting less sleep than required. For example, consistently sleeping 6 hours when the body needs 7-9 hours can lead to cumulative effects on health and well-being.
Sleep deprivation is a more severe form of sleep loss...

Correlations02:20

Correlations

37.1K
Correlation means that there is a relationship between two or more variables (such as ice cream consumption and crime), but this relationship does not necessarily imply cause and effect. When two variables are correlated, it simply means that as one variable changes, so does the other. We can measure correlation by calculating a statistic known as a correlation coefficient. A correlation coefficient is a number from -1 to +1 that indicates the strength and direction of the relationship between...

Summary

This study found that complement component 4 and complement factor I (CFI) are linked to sleep quality, duration, and bedtime. These findings highlight the role of complement components in sleep regulation.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Humoral mediators of inflammation are increasingly linked to sleep measures.
  • The specific role of complement components in chronic sleep disturbances remains under-characterized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between complement components (C3, C4, CFI) and various sleep measures.
  • To explore the role of complement system in chronic sleep attributes.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty university students participated in the study.
  • Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess four sleep measures: sleep quality, bedtime, sleep duration, and sleep onset latency.
  • Binary logistic regression analysis was employed to examine associations with complement components C3, C4, and CFI.

Main Results:

  • Complement component 4 showed significant associations with poorer sleep quality and shorter sleep duration.
  • Complement factor I (CFI) was associated with later bedtime and shorter sleep duration.
  • These associations remained significant after adjusting for age and BMI.

Conclusions:

  • Complement components play a significant role in the regulation of sleep.
  • Sleep assessment is recommended in conditions affecting complement components.
