Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination may precede a chronic illness characterized by neuropathic pain, fatigue, and autonomic dysfunction. Many patients experience debilitating symptoms, impacting daily life long-term.

Background:

  • Complex regional pain syndrome, postural orthostatic tachycardia, and fibromyalgia have been anecdotally linked to human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination.
  • These conditions share overlapping symptoms and diagnostic challenges, with potential roles for small fiber neuropathy and dysautonomia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of chronic illnesses developing after HPV vaccination.
  • To assess symptoms of fibromyalgia, dysautonomia, and neuropathic pain in individuals with post-vaccination chronic ailments.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized validated questionnaires: 2010 American College of Rheumatology Fibromyalgia Diagnostic Criteria, COMPASS 31 dysautonomia questionnaire, and S-LANSS neuropathic pain form.
  • E-mailed surveys to individuals reporting chronic illness onset post-HPV vaccination.
  • Collected 45 responses from 13 countries within one month.

Main Results:

  • The average age at vaccination was 14 years; 29% reported immediate symptom onset.
  • Common symptoms included musculoskeletal pain (66%), fatigue (57%), headache (57%), and dizziness (43%).
  • 53% met fibromyalgia criteria, COMPASS-31 scores indicated significant autonomic dysfunction, and 83% with pain showed neuropathic features (S-LANSS >12).

Conclusions:

  • A disabling syndrome of chronic neuropathic pain, fatigue, and autonomic dysfunction may occur following HPV vaccination.
  • Most affected individuals (93%) experience persistent, incapacitating symptoms years after vaccination, hindering school or work attendance.
