The Thyroid Gland01:23

The Thyroid Gland

8.7K
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and covers the anterior surface of the trachea. The gland has two lateral lobes connected by a thin tissue mass called the isthmus. Internally, each lobe comprises many small spherical structures known as thyroid follicles, surrounded by a network of blood vessels.
The follicles have a central cavity lined by simple cuboidal to squamous epithelial cells called follicular cells. These cells produce the glycoprotein...

Tumor Immunotherapy01:27

Tumor Immunotherapy

2.3K
Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Clinical Practice Guidelines

    Background:

    • Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is an aggressive endocrine malignancy.
    • Systemic therapy is crucial for managing advanced or metastatic disease.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To summarize key updates in systemic therapy for anaplastic thyroid carcinoma from the 2015 NCCN Guidelines.
    • To highlight changes in treatment recommendations for advanced or metastatic anaplastic thyroid cancer.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines) for Thyroid Carcinoma.
    • Focus on the 2015 update concerning anaplastic carcinoma systemic therapy.

    Main Results:

    • Updated recommendations include specific dosages and administration frequencies for systemic therapies.
    • Docetaxel/doxorubicin regimens have been added to the treatment options.
    • Single-agent cisplatin is no longer recommended for advanced or metastatic anaplastic thyroid cancer.

    Conclusions:

    • The 2015 NCCN Guidelines provide more detailed systemic therapy guidance for anaplastic thyroid cancer.
    • Treatment strategies have evolved, emphasizing specific regimens and excluding certain agents for advanced disease.
