Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Nephrology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Colovesical fistula is a rare condition, typically associated with diverticular disease.
  • Reports of colovesical fistula following renal transplantation are infrequent.
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) can be a presenting symptom in transplant recipients.

Observation:

  • A 53-year-old male renal transplant recipient presented with recurrent UTIs.
  • The patient was diagnosed with colovesical fistula 5 months post-transplantation.
  • Diverticular disease was noted as a potential contributing factor.

Findings:

  • Laparoscopic partial sigmoid colon resection with Hartmann's procedure was performed.
  • The patient experienced no recurrent UTIs 6 months post-surgery.

  • Renal graft function remained preserved after the intervention.
  • Implications:

    • Colovesical fistula should be considered in renal transplant recipients with recurrent UTIs.
    • Early diagnosis and surgical management are crucial for favorable outcomes.
    • Maintaining renal graft function is a key consideration in managing this complication.
