    Summary

Vertical root fractures in molars are rarely reported, often causing toothache without obvious cause. X-rays can diagnose these fractures, leading to extraction or root-preserving treatments.

    Area of Science:

    • Dentistry
    • Oral Surgery

    Background:

    • Toothache is a common dental complaint.
    • Tooth fractures can cause significant pain and tooth loss.

    Observation:

    • Vertical root fractures in molars, particularly those without prior endodontic treatment, are infrequently documented.
    • Patients presenting with toothache often have tooth fractures as the underlying cause.

    Findings:

    • X-ray examination is the preferred diagnostic tool for vertical root fractures, revealing abnormally large root canals.
    • Vertical root fractures generally have a poor prognosis, often necessitating tooth extraction.

    Implications:

    • Treatment options for vertical root fractures include extraction, root amputation, or hemisection.
    • Dentists should consider vertical root fracture in differential diagnoses for unexplained toothache.
