Daily physical activity (PA) may offer short-term cognitive benefits for older adults. This study found PA explained some daily cognitive function variability, suggesting potential for enhancing daily cognitive performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore within- and between-person associations between daily physical activity and cognitive function in older adults.
  • To examine the within-person effect sizes of physical activity on cognitive function.

Main Methods:

  • A microlongitudinal pilot study design was employed.
  • Fifty-one healthy older adults (mean age 70.1 years) participated.
  • Participants wore accelerometers and completed cognitive assessments for five days.

Main Results:

  • No significant associations were found between cognitive performance and average daily physical activity.
  • Physical activity explained 0-24% of within-person cognitive function variability, varying by cognitive task and activity dose.

Conclusions:

  • Physical activity may exert near-term effects on cognitive function.
  • Further research should investigate physical activity as a strategy to improve cognitive performance in daily life for older adults.
