Microbial Bioremediation of Plastics01:28

Microbial Bioremediation of Plastics

72
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a synthetic polymer widely utilized in the packaging industry, particularly for bottles and containers. Due to its chemical stability and durability, PET accumulates in the environment, contributing significantly to plastic pollution. It comprises repeating units of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, resulting in a semi-crystalline structure that is resistant to natural degradation processes.A notable breakthrough in plastic biodegradation came with the...

Fatigue01:21

Fatigue

1.1K
Fatigue occurs when materials rupture under repeated or fluctuating loads, even at stress levels far below their static breaking strength. It typically results in brittle failure, even for ductile materials. It is a critical consideration in designing machines and structural components subjected to repetitive or varying loads. The nature of these loadings can range from fluctuating loads like unbalanced pump impellers causing vibrations to repeatedly bending a thin steel rod wire back and forth...

Design Example: Analyzing Capacity Contours for Flood Risk Assessment

381
Flood risk assessment involves careful planning and analysis to ensure the safety of communities near water retention structures. Capacity contours are a vital tool in this process, as they illustrate the potential spread of water at specific levels in a given area. In the context of building a bund across a small valley, these contours play a critical role in evaluating the safety of nearby residential areas. In this example, the bund is intended to store stormwater in the valley. The engineers...

Environmental Applications of Microorganisms

1.5K
Microorganisms play a pivotal role in maintaining ecosystem balance by recycling essential elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, as well as supporting processes like bioremediation, wastewater treatment, and biofuel production.Microbes in Elemental CyclesIn the carbon cycle, microorganisms decompose organic matter, releasing carbon dioxide via aerobic respiration. This carbon dioxide is subsequently used by photosynthetic organisms to synthesize organic compounds, closing the...

Design Consideration01:22

Design Consideration

638
Designing a structure involves a series of considerations, primarily the material's ultimate strength, calculated through tests that measure changes under increased force until the material reaches its breaking point or limit. The ultimate load, where the material breaks, is divided by its original cross-sectional area, resulting in the ultimate normal stress or strength. The ultimate shearing stress is another significant factor taken into account.
The factor of safety is another key...

Biodeterioration01:28

Biodeterioration

64
Biodeterioration refers to the unwanted alteration of materials caused by microorganisms—especially fungi—which damage both organic substrates (paper, wood, textiles) and inorganic ones (stone, plaster, glass). Unlike abiotic decay, biodeterioration results from biological activity that produces physical disruption and chemical degradation.Physical deterioration occurs as fungal hyphae penetrate pores, cracks, and surface irregularities. Hyphal turgor pressure, thigmotropic growth...

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Science
  • Waste Management Engineering
  • Risk Assessment

Background:

  • Municipal solid waste (MSW) management in Taiwan presents renewable energy potential but faces lifecycle failures.
  • Existing literature shows the application of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to MSW lifecycles.
  • A systematic approach is needed to mitigate potential failures in waste classification, disposal, storage, collection, and transportation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To apply Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to identify, classify, and analyze common failures in the municipal solid waste lifecycle.
  • To determine appropriate risk scoring for severity, occurrence, and detection of failure modes.
  • To compute the Risk Priority Number (RPN) for prioritizing failure modes for improvement.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for systematic failure identification and analysis.
  • Assessed failure modes based on severity, occurrence, and detection parameters.
  • Calculated the Risk Priority Number (RPN) to rank failure modes by risk level.

Main Results:

  • Identified nineteen distinct failure modes within the municipal solid waste lifecycle.
  • Ranked nine of these failure modes as priority items requiring improvement based on RPN.
  • Recommended specific actions for all identified failure modes.

Conclusions:

  • The implementation of FMEA and recommended actions led to a remarkable reduction in failure occurrences within six months.
  • The study successfully minimized potential failures in MSW management.
  • Continuous improvement in waste management processes was achieved, enhancing environmental protection.
