[Pathogenesis and clinical manifestation of the styloid syndrome]

The styloid or Eagle's syndrome is a uncharacteristic pain and dysfunction syndrome of the head and neck. Symptoms, differential diagnosis, etiology and pathogenesis are discussed. 9 cases are presented with special consideration of the operative treatment, 6 cases were treated via an extraoral, 3 via an intraoral incision. Along with the intraoral approach one major complication, a thrombosis of the internal carotid artery, was observed. After one extraoral approach a minor complication, a temporary irritation of the hypoglossic and lingual nerves, occurred.
