Area of Science:

  • Periodontal plastic surgery
  • Regenerative medicine
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Traditional root coverage procedures often require a second surgical donor site, increasing patient morbidity.
  • Alternative materials are sought to simplify grafting and improve outcomes in periodontal surgery.
  • Resorbable amniotic membrane offers structural support, enhances healing, and provides stem cells for tissue regeneration.

Observation:

  • This observational case series evaluated amniotic membrane for treating shallow-to-moderate isolated gingival recession defects.
  • Three cases with Miller's Class I or II recession were treated.
  • Measurements included recession depth, width, keratinized gingiva (KG) width, and clinical attachment level (CAL) at baseline and 3, 6 months postoperatively.

Findings:

  • Six months post-procedure, an average of 70.2% root coverage was achieved.
  • Clinical attachment level (CAL) significantly improved from 6.4 mm to 3.5 mm.
  • Keratinized gingiva (KG) width significantly increased from 3.2 mm to 5.9 mm.

Implications:

  • Amniotic membrane offers a viable alternative to autogenous grafts for root coverage, reducing surgical time and complexity.
  • The self-adherent nature of amniotic membrane simplifies its placement, making it a preferred material.
  • This approach holds promise for improving patient outcomes and reducing morbidity in periodontal plastic surgery.
